Furnace Issues in Midlothian, VA

If your furnace fires up, heats up for a couple of minutes, and then turns off before reaching the target temperature, your home never feels comfortable. The following are some of the reasons why your furnace could be malfunctioning.

You Have a Poorly Calibrated Thermostat

Your HVAC system’s furnace serves as its brain, sending signals and telling it when to activate, how long to run for, and when to shut down. If the thermostat is not calibrated correctly, it thinks it has reached the desired temperature after only running for a few minutes. Our HVAC professionals at Daniel's Heating & Refrigeration Corp. can use a couple of simple yet effective troubleshooting techniques to identify the problem and offer solutions.

A Damaged Thermocouple

The thermocouple sits next to the pilot light. As a heat sensor, its job is to close the gas valve if the pilot light goes out. This prevents gas from filling your home.

However, if the thermocouple is malfunctioning, it may not sense the heat from the pilot light, causing the gas valves to shut off randomly. If your furnace is constantly turning off, check the pilot light. A pilot light that does not stay lit indicates a bad thermocouple that will need to be replaced by HVAC professionals.

The Condensate Pan Is Full

Your furnace generates condensate, which drips into a pan and drains away. If the drain into this pan is clogged, the pan might start to fill up.

As the rising water level hits the sensor, the furnace is automatically shut off to prevent condensation from spilling over the edge and damaging the home. You can prevent this problem by scheduling regular furnace maintenance, which will include thoroughly cleaning the condensate pan and drain.
