Hearing the gentle hum of your air conditioner is gratifying when it’s hot, but it’s much less so when your active AC isn’t blowing cold air. If this is a problem that you’re experiencing in your Midlothian, VA home, the following are six possible reasons why.
1. Your Thermostat Is Set to “FAN”
If your thermostat is set to “FAN” rather than “AUTO”, your air conditioner blower fan will circulate air throughout your home, but the cooling cycle will never start. Check your thermostat to make sure that it’s set correctly.
2. Your AC Air Filter Is Dirty
Dirty AC air filters are a common cause of a variety of air conditioner issues. If your filter is too dirty, it can restrict airflow. You should check your AC air filter every one to three months and change them as needed.
3. Your AC Coils Need Cleaning
Your air conditioner’s evaporator coil inside absorbs heat from the air the system circulates; the refrigerant in the coil then moves to the condenser coil outside, where it releases that heat. If either of these coils becomes coated in dust, they won’t work efficiently. Coil cleaning is a standard part of AC performance tune-up service. If you haven’t scheduled a AC maintenance tune-up in a while, now is the time to do so.
4. You Have a Refrigerant Leak
Low refrigerant levels can impact your air conditioner’s ability to cool your home. Worse still, if this problem is left unchecked for too long, it could cause your AC compressor to fail. Check your air conditioner for signs of leaking refrigerant. If you suspect that this is the problem, schedule service right away.
5. Your Air Conditioner Is Too Small for Your Home
If you selected and installed your air conditioner on your own or if it was installed by an inexperienced technician, it may be too small for your home. Undersized air conditioners lack the power to cool homes effectively. As a result, they may run nearly non-stop without fully cooling your home.
