You run the air conditioner, yet it never seems to reach the temperature you set or cool every room evenly. This can indicate a problem with the AC system. Below are a few of the most common issues that homeowners encounter.

Clogged Air Filters

The filter is located in your return vent, and its job is to trap pollutants like dirt and pollen so that they don’t clog the air handler. However, the filter itself can get clogged and obstruct the flow of air, straining your system and causing uneven cooling. Replacing filters is a simple DIY project.

Dirty Evaporator and Condenser Coils

Your AC system is broken down into two units: the air handler, which is indoors, and the condenser, which is outdoors. The air handler has what’s called the evaporator coil, which absorbs heat from the air, thus allowing cool air to course through your house. The condenser coil releases this heat outside.

Both coils can become dirty and grimy and hinder the removal of heat, resulting in lukewarm air. The condenser can gather more than dirt; it can also collect fallen leaves and twigs and even lint if a dryer vent is located nearby. Cleaning these parts isn’t too difficult.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

You might think frozen evaporator coils would make the air cooler, but the complete opposite is the truth since the absorption of heat is impossible in this condition. Freezing can occur because of:

  • Dirt buildup on the coil
  • Clogged air filters
  • Low refrigerant levels

Leaking Air Ducts

If uneven cooling is the issue with your air conditioner, the cause may be a leak in the ductwork that’s letting the cool air escape. This can be fixed with duct sealing.
