You should make sure that your furnace is prepared for the winter before you need to use it. A furnace doesn’t require a homeowner to do a lot of work, but there are some things you should do yourself.

Adjust Your Thermostat

You should switch your thermostat from cooling to heating mode before it gets cold outside. Set the thermostat a few degrees hotter than the current temperature and make sure the furnace turns on after a minute or so. If it doesn’t turn on, you should contact a professional.

Change the Filter

If you regularly change the filter, you will extend the life of the furnace and save money on your utility bills. You should replace the filter before winter and then every few months after that. If you have pets, you may need to change the filter monthly.

Test the Igniter Switch

If you have an old furnace, you might need to relight the pilot. If the pilot doesn’t light, push the reset button. If that doesn’t solve the issue, check the breaker. If neither of these works, call a heating and cooling company to have a technician assess the situation.

Check Your Air Vents

You should make sure all the air vents in your home are open and unobstructed. If your air vents are blocked, your furnace has to work harder to heat your home. Furniture, drapes, plants and other objects should be kept away from air vents.

Have Maintenance Performed

Fall is the perfect time to have a technician professionally maintain your furnace. They’ll clean and service critical parts and make sure that everything is operating correctly and safely.
